The environmental group GEN-GOB has communicated the birth of 10 sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the early morning of September 10, 2020 on the beach of It's Cavallet, in the Natural Park of Las Salines de Ibiza and Formentera.
Turtles are from last July's nest in Cala Nova, which moved to Es Cavallet to improve its chances of survival and development.
This nest of Es Cavallet has been guarded by volunteers the 24 hours during 58 days of incubation, who have also prepared the turtles for their transfer to the Fauna Recovery Center of the Balearic Islands (COFIB), where they will be in incubators until they are heavy enough to be released into the sea.
Together with the 2 that were born on September 1, 2020, they add 12 those who were born in this nest. The total laying of the nest was 99 eggs , some of which were taken directly to incubators, although most have remained on the beach.
The Ministry of Environment and Territory, the GEN-GOB and the Association of Volunteers d'Eivissa They have appreciated the great work carried out by the volunteers in the custody of the eggs.
It should be remembered that there are still 69 eggs to hatch. It remains to be seen how many of those that remain may be viable. In a natural environment only 1 turtle in 100 survives its first year y only 1 in 1.000 at reproductive age.
