The photographic work'Ibiza, the lost island of Walter Benjamin' is the result of various trips to the island made by Cecilia Orueta during 2021 and 2022, a project that arises from the artist's fascination with books'Letters from the time of Ibiza', by the German philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin, one of the most relevant intellectuals of the 1932th century who lived for several months on the island. According to Orueta, in the correspondence, written during the summers of 1933 and XNUMX to various recipients, "not infrequently the light of the mediterranean paradise as a haven of peace".
And he delves into the fact that Benjamin defined Ibiza as “an archaic land with the most virgin landscape that I have never found, apart from the movements of the world, even from civilization" and that "He would always remember it as a paradise, even in the days prior to his death, a fact that paradoxically would take place on the border of a country, Spain, which once again he planned to reach fleeing from Nazism, whose persecution was already spreading throughout Europe.".
Cecilia Orueta (Madrid, 1963) is a painting restorer and photographer, she has held exhibitions in different cities and published various works in Spanish newspapers and magazines. She has also made a short film from her photographs and published three photography books.
